Apply to our PhD in Nursing Science program

To apply to our PhD in Nursing Science program, you must meet the minimum criteria for admission, which includes:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from programs within regionally accredited institutions of higher education.
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required, for the BSN degree and for the MSN, if applicable. Similar equivalency will be required for graduates of international programs.
  • MSN-PhD track only: Successful completion of a graduate-level course in statistics (3 credit hours with a grade of B- or higher).

Fall 2027 Entry

  • Applications available online: October 15, 2026
  • Deadline to apply: January 15, 2027
  • Selected applicants will be invited for an interview in late January/early February
  • Notifications sent to students in late February 2027
  • Program begins in August 2027

Steps to apply

PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to meet with our graduate admissions counselor prior to applying to the program. You can schedule an online appointment using Bookings. If you prefer to meet in person, email nuadmit@iu.edu with your availability. 

Prior completion of a 3-credit, graduate-level statistics course from an accredited four-year university with a grade of B or better is required prior to matriculation into the MSN-PhD track. If you wish to take NURS-R 505 Measurement & Data Analysis or another course at IU Indianapolis to fulfill this requirement, please contact nuadmit@iu.edu for details on how to apply as a non-degree student.

 

Complete and submit an IU graduate application for your intended program by the application deadline. We recommend using Google Chrome to complete your application.

Be sure to upload the required supplemental materials to your application before submitting:

  • Resume/CV
  • Personal statement
  • Writing sample

You do not need to upload unofficial transcripts to your application. There are optional places in the application to do so, but you may skip those.

There is a $70 non-refundable application fee. This fee is waived for IU School of Nursing alumni.

Request official transcripts be sent from ALL college and universities that you have previously attended (including IU). Only transcripts sent directly from the institution to the IU Indianapolis Graduate School are considered official.

Official transcripts must be received by the School of Nursing no later than 14 days after the application deadline. 

Applicants may be invited to participate in a virtual interview with IU School of Nursing faculty following the application deadline. Please be on the lookout for an email from Nursing Graduate Admissions with an invitation to select your interview date and time.
