IU School of Nursing Strategic Plan 2024-2027

Our strategic plan is grounded in the realities of current nursing practice. We listened to community stakeholders, practice partners, faculty, alumni, students, and staff for the things what were most important. 

The IU 2030: The Indiana University Strategic Plan was our north star in aligning with the things that are important to Indiana University. We structured our plan to support and sustain this larger endeavor.

This collaborative approach that gave space for all voices and perspectives has led to a clear path to success for the IU School of Nursing.

Student Success and Opportunity

We will attract and cultivate a diverse student population prepared to care for the needs of a diverse society. Our admissions process must be inclusive and equitable and our rigorous academic programs fueled by high impact teaching. We will foster opportunities, community, and connectedness that prepares students for lifelong success.

Strategic Objective 1: Increase/maintain enrollment to meet the healthcare needs of communities we serve in Indiana and beyond.

  • Attract and cultivate a student population that mirrors the communities’ graduates will serve, enhancing the institution’s ability to address the needs of society.
  • Review and revise the admissions criteria to align with evidence-based holistic admissions processes that ensure that at risk groups are not unintentionally disadvantaged.
  • Increase the visibility of the IU School of Nursing and improve its reputation by promoting its identity and impact.
  • Strengthen enrollment through maintaining and developing rigorous academic programs that meet the needs of students, nursing practice, and more broadly the nursing discipline while enhancing the School of Nursing's reputation for excellence.
  • Implement High Impact Teaching Practices in undergraduate curriculum.

Strategic Objective 2: Foster retention and graduation rates through academic excellence, wellness programming, and structures that foster community and connectedness.

  • Implement a “Student Success” program across all campuses built on three pillars of success (academic, wellness and community) to ensure student retention.
  • Enhance student engagement by providing a wider range of campus experiences and support activities at the School of Nursing.
  • Create unique and transformative learning experiences for students that help establish the School of Nursing’s identity and enhance its reputation, in the classroom and beyond.
  • Increase access to cost effective education, reduce debt burden, and enhance scholarship opportunities.

Strategic Objective 3: Increase/maintain enrollment to meet the healthcare needs of communities we serve in Indiana and beyond

  • Develop and implement competency-based curricula for all CCNE accredited programs following Transparency in Learning and Teaching practices.
  • Maintain and expand programs and services at the School of Nursing that prepare students for lifelong success and engaged citizenship and strengthen the school’s commitment to its alumni and beyond.

Transformative Research & Creativity

Our research and scholarship agenda focuses on health equity and disparity priorities to improve health outcomes and transformative teaching strategies to empower students and shape tomorrow's leaders. We will support and attract a cadre of nurse scientists and scholars and actively disseminate their research findings. We will be a national leader of education for nursing policy.

Strategic Objective: Stimulate and cultivate a culture of excellence in nursing scholarship, research, and policy at the IU School of Nursing.

  • Develop a research agenda that focuses on social determinants of health to improve health outcomes.
  • Recruit and retain a multifaceted cadre of nurse scientists.
    Integrate health indicators and SDOH across all research centers of excellence.
  • Identify and support research centers of excellence that are responsive to state and funder priorities.
  • Increase and diversify our total external funding year-over-year.
  • Leverage and facilitate use of IU-owned and maintained databases for School of Nursing faculty.
  • Disseminate the School of Nursing's faculty and student research findings from studies focused on multifactorial and at-risk populations.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and edge running.
  • Increase funding sources for research in health equity.

Strategic Objective: The IU School of Nursing will be a national leader of education for nursing policy that contributes to improved health outcomes in Indiana and beyond.

  • Explore the creation of a Health Policy Academy that attracts internal School of Nursing and external participants for the Academy offerings.
  • Complete a business plan for a School of Nursing Policy Academy that captures revenue potential for educational and professional development offerings.
  • Create funding streams for the School of Nursing Policy Academy.
  • Establish initiatives for the integration of health policy and advocacy content into all School of Nursing degree programs.
  • Create a health policy research agenda for the School of Nursing that leverages the research strengths of the school.
  • Develop a plan for annual health policy conferences hosted by the School of Nursing. Conference offerings would be available for CE and credit.
  • Explore opportunities for academic (policy)/practice and academic (policy)/ organizational partnerships and IU interprofessional seminars to be offered through the Policy Academy.

Service to Our State and Beyond

Through strong partnerships we will collaborate for the better health of all, further our research agenda, and provide meaningful student opportunities. We will address the issues underlying Indiana's health indicators and social determinants of health.

We will create and sustain a work environment of respect, growth, belonging, and inclusiveness for all employees. This will allow them to work to their highest level of job fulfillment and growth.

Strategic Objective: Develop, foster, and invest local, regional, national, and global partnerships and collaborative relationships to improve the health of Indiana communities and beyond.

  • Build a formal infrastructure for an Academic Industry/ Practice/Community partnership based on AACN guidelines for A/P collaboratives.
  • Develop a centralized partnership ontology (clinical placement, service, research, philanthropy).
  • Optimize educational opportunities for students through partnerships by nurturing collaborations.
  • Create an evidence-based transition to practice program for students and new graduates to assure “practice-ready” nurses.
  • Develop a School of Nursing NP faculty practice to provide care to at-risk communities in Indiana.
  • Create innovative School of Nursing service partnerships with industry, business, and other partners to mutually benefit the school and the partner.

Strategic Objectives: 1) Establish and sustain a diverse culture in which students, faculty, and staff are welcoming, open, and respectful to create an environment for growth, belonging, and inclusiveness. 2) Create an environment where staff and faculty thrive and grow with the highest level of well-being.

  • Provide a safe environment for psychological, emotional, and physical well-being for all faculty and staff.
  • From interview process to onboarding, through service and retirement, create a spirit of belonging for all faculty and staff.

Strategic Objectives: 1) To create a level of faculty engagement that engages, supports, develops, attracts, and retains the highest quality faculty in the country so that they can be the top tier educators, researchers, and clinicians. 2) To create a level of staff engagement that engages, supports, develops, and attracts the highest quality staff and allows them to work to their highest level of job fulfillment and growth.

  • Ensure all faculty and staff are able to work to their highest level of job fulfillment and growth.
  • Develop a plan to attract early career faculty.
  • Create a recruitment and retention plan for faculty that emphasizes the competitive advantage to be an IU faculty member.
  • Become a school with excellent faculty retention and faculty development.

  • Have an ongoing data set of Workforce Data to study current and future RN Workforce needs.
  • Increase tenure track faculty at the School of Nursing through recruitment and retention of tenure track faculty mid to senior level.
  • Ensure all staff are able to work to their highest level of job fulfillment and growth.
  • Create and/or expand current orientation practice and onboarding.
