The Champion Center’s vision requires support from external funding sources. Many different organizations can support the Center including non-profits, individual and corporate donors, and federal agencies. Funding is used to support cancer research and training for predoctoral fellows, postdoctoral fellows, and early career investigators.
Widely recognized for its expertise in cancer research, IU School of Nursing has a well-established infrastructure and track record of success. Twelve faculty researchers are involved in cancer research—making us the largest cohort of cancer researchers at a school of nursing in the nation.
A rich history of informed cancer care and support
Research focusing on cancer prevention and control led by nurses began at IU School of Nursing in 1995. This research focused on smoking cessation, breast, colon, and cervical cancer led to efforts to improve cancer prevention, screening, symptom management, survivorship, and end-of-life care.
The Champion Center celebrates and builds upon the highly regarded research collaborative nationally known as the “Behavioral Cooperative Oncology Group” (BCOG) founded by Dr. Victoria Champion, a leader in cancer research and training. Funded by the Walther Cancer Foundation, the BCOG developed a national reputation as a training center of excellence for predoctoral fellows, postdoctoral fellows, and early career investigators. The researchers affiliated with the BCOG built the science that transformed the standards and practice for patient and health care delivery.
With strong partnerships with the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and five Midwestern research universities, BCOG faculty generated over $71 million dollars in external funds to support cancer research. The results of this research have been implemented nationally to improve patient outcomes and inform healthcare delivery.
