The Post-MSN graduate certificate in available to nurses who already hold a Master's degree or higher in Nursing and are seeking to become certified as an Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist. This certificate is taught in a hybrid-distance format, with minimal on-campus requirements.
Degree Requirements
The number of credit hours and time to completion varies based on coursework completed in your prior degree, but ranges from 17-27 credit hours, and can be completed in 16-21 months. 525 clinical hours are required for all students and must be completed within the state of Indiana. Each student receives an individualized plan of study that will ensure they meet criteria for graduation and national certification. Please note that, due to the time involved, faculty will develop a student's plan of study only after the student is admitted into the graduate certificate program. However, admissions staff can help give you an idea of what you might expect.
Certification
Graduates of the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist Post-MSN Certificate program are eligible to sit for national board certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and prescriptive authority from the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.
Admission
Admission to the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist Post-MSN certificate program requires:
- A Master of Science in Nursing (or higher nursing degree) from a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), or foreign equivalent as evaluated by the IU Indianapolis Office of International Affairs.
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in your highest earned nursing degree, or equivalent.
- An active, unencumbered Indiana or Compact RN license.
- A minimum of one year (1,800 hours) of hospital-based RN or APRN experience with adults.
