Traditional BSN

Apply to the traditional BSN pathway

If you are a student pursing your first baccalaureate degree, our traditional BSN program is designed for you.

Our concept-based curriculum prepares you for a career as a professional nurse. You will study current trends in healthcare and participate in exceptional clinical opportunities and state-of-the-art simulation at one of our three campuses at IU Bloomington, IU Fort Wayne, or IU Indianapolis.

The IU School of Nursing traditional BSN pathway requires four years of full-time study.

Traditional BSN admission requirements

To be eligible to apply to the traditional BSN pathway, you must:

  • Be admitted to a core IU School of Nursing campus (IU Bloomington, IU Fort Wayne, and/or IU Indianapolis) as a degree-seeking student
  • Complete between 20 and 24 credits of pre-nursing coursework, including all courses required for admission to IU School of Nursing.

Holistic Standard Admission Review (NEW for 2026-27)

The IU School of Nursing uses a Holistic Standard Admission Review to determine academic potential for success. Learn how overall admission scores will be generated from three components.

Emphasis will be placed on demonstrated leadership and direct involvement in health care settings.

GPA across all courses taken at IU will be considered. This includes:

  • ACP courses, Extended-X Eligible
  • Previous institution GPA for external students

GPA from the specific set of prerequisite courses for Nursing admission. These courses are selected as critical components for preparation for the nursing school curriculum to help students be most successful in their nursing school education.

Students are ranked by their overall admission score and receive offers based on rank.

Please note, students are admitted to the BSN program for a specific semester and are expected to enter the program that semester. Applicants who decline admission, or who are not offered admission, may reapply for a later semester. Candidates have a total of three application consideration attempts. (A single application with multiple preferences selected is considered one application attempt.)
