Transfer to the IU School of Nursing
Indiana University Major Change Interest
If you're a current Indiana University student who has discovered a passion for nursing, we're here to help you explore your next steps.
Because admission to the nursing program is competitive, changing your major can involve more than updating your academic record. See below for more information based on your admitted campus and stage of your educational journey.
Bloomington
If you have been admitted to IU Bloomington as a non pre-nursing major, click below to learn more.
Log in to your IU Portal and follow the link to "Make Changes to Your Application."
Candidates will be reviewed for approval when they did not previously receive review for pre-nursing at the time of their initial application.
Complete the Major Change Request Form by March 15.
Note: Students who previously selected pre-nursing as their first major but were admitted to their second major at the time of Bloomington admission will not be able to request a major change to pre-nursing.
Contact your current AMES advisor or email ames@iu.edu to discuss your interest in declaring or changing your major.
Fort Wayne
If you have been admitted to IU Fort Wayne as a non pre-nursing major, click below to learn more.
Contact IU Fort Wayne admissions to update your application.
Contact your academic advisor to discuss your interest in changing your major as they can initiate the change before you meet them at Ruby's Registration Rally.
Indianapolis
If you have been admitted to IU Indianapolis as a non pre-nursing major, click below to learn more.
Contact University College Academic and Career Development for assistance.
Major changes should be requested prior to orientation to ensure accurate placement.
Contact the IU Indianapolis Academic and Career Development office to schedule an appointment with a Health and Life Sciences (HLS) advisor. During a meeting with your new HLS academic advisor, you'll review the nursing application, required courses and application deadlines.
Intercampus Transfer
Current pre-nursing student interest
A pre-nursing student interested in applying to multiple IU School of Nursing campus locations may do so in the IU School of Nursing application. Students also may indicate their preference of any campus within the application. However, in order to be considered at alternate campus locations, a student must have applied and be admitted as an intercampus transfer to those locations.
Current IU core nursing student interest
Once a student has accepted an offer of admission to the IU School of Nursing program, they are expected to complete the program at that campus location. Intercampus transfer after the first year of nursing study is space permitting and not always possible.
A current nursing student interested in transferring campuses should schedule a meeting with their academic advisor.
External Nursing Student Transfer
Current nursing students external to Indiana University or a current nursing student at an IU School of Nursing campus other than IU Bloomington, IU Fort Wayne, and IU Indianapolis should contact iunurse@iu.edu to discuss interest in transferring.
External pre-nursing transfers
Applicants must be admitted as transfer students to the campus of interest to be able to apply to the IU School of Nursing.
Students may transfer under any major to be eligible for nursing admission. Students with questions about eligibility should contact iunurse@iu.edu.
Transfer students can only be admitted to the traditional BSN pathway for the fall cohort. IU Bloomington does not allow students to transfer in as pre-nursing.
IU Bloomington transfer candidates must meet the following baseline criteria: 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA, B or higher, or current enrollment in both Anatomy and Physiology.
The Fort Wayne and Indianapolis campuses accept nursing program applications from students outside of pre-nursing. Students with questions about eligibility should contact iunurse@iu.edu.
Students must be pre-nursing to be eligible to apply. Students cannot attend IU Bloomington under a different major and apply to the program on the IU Bloomington campus.
Official transcript submission
Please note!
Students who have been dismissed from another School of Nursing are not eligible for admission to the IU School of Nursing, unless approval is granted through the Admission, Progression, and Graduation (APG) review process. Contact iunurse@iu.edu with questions or concerns.
