The IU Indianapolis Top 100 list celebrates students who are making a lasting impact on campus through their leadership, service, and academic excellence. Get to know IU School of Nursing honoree—Lia Sanchez, Class of 2026 BSN student—as she shares her story and what this honor signifies.
What does being named a Top 100 student mean to you?
Sanchez: Being named a Top 100 student is incredibly meaningful to me because it represents a goal I set for myself early in my nursing journey and worked hard to achieve. When I found out, I felt overwhelming happiness and pride, knowing that everything I had poured into my experience had truly paid off. Throughout nursing school, I have faced challenges that tested me both academically and personally, but I remained committed to growing through those moments. This recognition reflects not only my accomplishments, but also my resilience, growth, and dedication to becoming the best version of myself.
How have your extracurricular activities or leadership roles shaped your experience as a student at IU School of Nursing?
My time at the IU School of Nursing has been shaped by my involvement in a variety of organizations and experiences that allowed me to grow far beyond the classroom. I have been actively involved in the Student Nurses Association, Minorities in Nursing, the Student Nurse Partnership Program, and initiatives such as Make-A-Wish, along with participating in community service and studying abroad. Each of these opportunities gave me a deeper understanding of the impact nurses can have in diverse communities. Serving as a peer tutor was especially meaningful, as it allowed me to support others while strengthening my own confidence and knowledge. Through these experiences, I have developed essential skills in communication, leadership, and empathy, all of which will continue to guide me in my nursing career.
Who has had the greatest influence on your nursing journey and why?
The greatest influences on my nursing journey have been my parents. My dad, a physician, has guided me with his knowledge and experience, offering insight and encouragement as I’ve navigated nursing school. Watching his dedication to patient care has inspired me to pursue nursing with compassion and purpose. My mom has been a constant source of support, always encouraging me and reminding me of my strength during challenging times. She has always led by example, showing me what it truly means to care for others selflessly while putting people first with kindness and compassion. Her strength and unwavering support have shaped who I am. Together, they have instilled in me the values of empathy, perseverance, and kindness. They have given me a sense of purpose and a passion for caring for others that I carry with me every day.
What are your goals after graduation and how do hope to make a difference as a nurse?
After graduation, I will be working in the Level IV NICU at the Riley Simon Family Tower at Riley Children's Hospital, caring for critically ill neonates. This has always been my dream, and it holds even deeper meaning because of my connection to the field. Growing up with a father who is a neonatologist allowed me to see firsthand the difference compassionate care can make. As a nurse, I am passionate about advocating for patients who cannot advocate for themselves. I want to ensure that both my patients and their families feel supported, heard, and cared for during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. In the future, I plan to continue my education and become a nurse practitioner so I can expand my impact and take on a greater role in patient care.
