What does being named a Top 100 student mean to you?
LaRouche: Being named a Top 100 student is a reflection of the dedication, resilience, and passion I have poured into my time at IU Indianapolis. It represents more than academic success—it reflects my commitment to embracing every opportunity to grow, lead, and serve. I have intentionally sought experiences that challenged me, diversified my skillset, and allowed me to give my best to my peers and community. This recognition is not just an award, but a meaningful reminder of how I chose to spend my undergraduate years with purpose, joy, and a deep sense of fulfillment.
How have your extracurricular activities or leadership roles shaped your experience as a student at IU School of Nursing?
My first leadership experience as an academic anatomy mentor ignited my passion for education and mentorship. Watching students succeed when given the right tools and support was incredibly rewarding and inspired me to further invest in leadership. I became actively involved in student nursing organizations at the local, state, and national levels, where I continued to serve as a resource and advocate for students committed to their professional development. Through these roles, I have developed confidence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of purpose, while also forming meaningful relationships and friendships that will extend far beyond my time in nursing school.
Who has had the greatest influence on your nursing journey?
The greatest influence on my nursing journey has been my oncology healthcare team. The nurses and physicians who have cared for me throughout my life consistently demonstrated compassion, dignity, and humanity, making me feel seen as more than a patient. Their care not only shaped my experience but also inspired the kind of nurse I strive to become. While my chronic illness has given me a unique perspective and deepened my empathy, it was their example that showed me what compassionate, patient-centered care truly looks like. I am especially grateful to my nurses Jayne Vonbergen, Lisa Beckwith, and Jennifer Pencek—I hope to carry forward even a fraction of the impact they have had on me.
What are your goals after graduation and how do hope to make a difference as a nurse?
After graduation, I will begin my nursing career at Riley Hospital for Children on the inpatient pediatric oncology unit. My immediate goal is to successfully transition into practice and grow into a confident, competent nurse. I am deeply passionate about caring for this patient population and hope to make a meaningful difference by supporting children and their families during some of their most vulnerable moments. I strive to bring compassion, positivity, and presence into every interaction—caring for others in a way that reflects the love, grace, and compassion that Jesus calls us to show—while offering not only clinical care, but also comfort, hope, and genuine human connection.
Is there anything else about your experience at IU School of Nursing you’d like to add?
My experience at the IU School of Nursing has been transformative in every sense of the word. It has challenged me academically, strengthened me personally, and shaped me into the future nurse I aspire to be. Through rigorous coursework, diverse clinical experiences, and meaningful leadership opportunities, I have developed not only clinical competence, but also resilience, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of what it means to truly care for others.
What stands out most to me is the community—faculty, peers, and mentors who have continuously supported, encouraged, and pushed me to grow. I have been surrounded by individuals who are passionate about nursing and committed to excellence, which has inspired me to hold myself to the same standard. These relationships have been instrumental in my journey and have made IU feel like more than just a place of education, but a place of belonging. Grateful isn't near a strong enough word. Thank you to the IU School of Nursing!
