Indiana University School of Nursing’s Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing has been honored with the 2023-2025 Chapter Key Award, the organization’s highest recognition for its chapters.
Sigma Theta Tau was founded in 1922 by six IU students, forming the first chapter (Alpha). The honor society was designed to recognize scholarship, represent the best in nursing, encourage future leaders, and provide a social forum for nursing students. Its Chapter Key Award, established in 1991, honors chapters that excel in membership engagement, service and community impact, education, and leadership development.
Out of more than 650 Sigma chapters worldwide, only a select group achieves the distinction of the Chapter Key Award, and this marks the eighth time the Alpha Chapter has been recognized.
“Being honored with the Key award is not just a recognition of our chapter’s achievements, it’s a celebration of the values, vision, and collective effort that resonate across Sigma borders,” said Sigma Alpha Chapter president Tonja Padgett, clinical associate professor and assistant dean at the IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis. “It also affirms our commitment to excellence and our impact on the global stage.”
The Chapter Key Award will be presented during Sigma’s 48th Biennial Convention to be held on November 8-11 in Indianapolis.

Founded in 1914, Indiana University School of Nursing is one of the largest nursing programs in Indiana that offers programs from the BSN through the doctorate. The school is composed of campuses in Bloomington, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis.
