Biography
Dr. von Gaudecker is an Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing whose work focuses on improving access to epilepsy care and strengthening health systems in underserved communities. Her research bridges clinical science, nursing leadership, and community engagement to close the epilepsy treatment gap—a global challenge affecting millions of people living in low- and middle-income countries. She currently leads a large NIH-funded research program in Kenya that expands epilepsy care through task sharing, the integration of medical record systems, and local capacity building. Her work combines rigorous science with compassion, advancing models of care that are both sustainable and culturally grounded.
Dr. von Gaudecker has an active national and international presence through her research collaborations, peer-reviewed publications, and invited presentations at global scientific platforms. Her studies explore treatment-seeking behaviors, women’s experiences with epilepsy, and health-system barriers across diverse cultural settings, highlighting cross-disciplinary contributions to global neurological nursing research. She serves on the Executive Board of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) North America Region, was the founding Vice Chair (playing a pivotal role in the section's development) and now serves as Treasurer of the ILAE Nursing Section, and as the U.S.-based lead for the AMPATH Nursing Working Group, which connects nurses across multiple countries in areas of education, research, and clinical care. A Certified Global Nurse Consultant through the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and a Fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the American Epilepsy Society, Dr. von Gaudecker’s leadership exemplifies compassionate, equity-driven scholarship that advances global neurological health and nursing excellence.
