Biography

Dr. Shieh has a clinical certification in inpatient obstetric nursing and a public health background. Her research is focused on maternal and infant health. As a health promotion researcher, Dr. Shieh devotes her efforts to improve maternal health and reduce infant mortality specifically through prenatal risk identification and maternal health behavior change. She has studied maternal-fetal attachment of illicit-drug users and information-seeking behavior of pregnant women. Her current research is focused on weight management and obesity prevention in pregnant women. Her interventions highlight self-management and innovation. She adopts self-monitoring strategy and lifestyle intervention to empower pregnant women to take charge of their weight management. She and her colleagues also apply community-engaged approaches to identify high-risk maternal biopsychosocial factors that contribute to infant mortality and deploy interventions to promote maternal health and reduce infant death. She has received research and scholarship awards from many organizations, such as the Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses and its Indiana chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society Alpha Chapter, Indiana Public Health Foundation Public Health and Preventive Medicine, CTSI Translation to Practice Scholar, and Yale University School of Nursing Alumni Association. She has also served for many professional organizations, including the American Public Health Association Maternal and Child Health Section’s Greg Alexander Outstanding Student Paper session, Journal of Community Health Nursing (Editorial Advisory Board), the Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses Research Advisory Panel, the Midwest Nursing Research Society (Research Interest Group Advisory Committee), and the American Academy of Nursing Maternal and Infant Health Expert Panel and the Edge Runners’ National Advisory Council.

Description of the video:

Several years ago, while I was working on a maternity unit, I cared for many mothers who were actively using illicit drugs during pregnancy. And that got me to think, would teaching the women, you know, increasing their understanding of the consequences of drug use, help them to stop? And so the questions sparked my interest in the relationship between cognition and behaviors. So I started to explore how people process and act upon information. More recently, my research have focused on prenatal life behavior change, especially how to help pregnant women avoid gaining too much weight during pregnancy. Gaining too much weight has increased the risk of developing complications for the mother and the babies. So strategies like cell monitoring, cell evaluation, and problem solving are tools can empower women to take on an active role in managing their health throughout pregnancy. Overall, my research is really helping individual pregnant women to develop their skills to cope and to manage their health. I think there are many good things about, you know, about IU School of Nursing, but the one of the things that I value about the Indiana University School of Nursing is the comprehensive support it offers faculties. I would say that our faculties are extremely bright, creative, and adaptable, and they bring in, you know, diverse perspectives to their work. And they are always very open to new ideas and approaches, and that creates a dynamic, you know, collaborative environment that foster innovation and growth.
