Master of Science in Nursing

Adult Nurse Practitioner

The adult nurse practitioner track is a 42-credit-hour program that prepares students for the advanced practice of nursing in primary health care of adults. The focus is on the comprehensive study of well, at risk, and chronically ill clients and their families who are cared for in ambulatory or extended care settings. In collaboration with other health care professionals, students provide health promotion, health maintenance, and management in a variety of clinical sites. The program is designed for either part- or full-time study.

The core courses provide a solid foundation in the use of research and theory as a basis for the diagnosis and treatment of illness and the promotion of wellness. Clinical experiences are preceptored in community- or outpatient-based settings. Focus area courses enable students to tailor their studies to meet their career goals or emerging employment opportunities.

All potential applicants must have a personal interview with Dr. Susan J. Moore. The application process is competitive. Aspects that are considered for admission, not in specific priority, are your personal statement, GPA, interview, work experience, references, and ability for critical thinking.

The philosophy of this program is to tailor learning according to the needs of each learner. Active learning strategies dominate the curriculum.  Classroom activities include students identifying and discussing their learning issues and faculty clarifying and presenting specific content.  Strategies for learning include practice-based learning, case analysis, student clinical presentations, and preceptor/faculty/self evaluations of clinical experiences.
