Clinical Faculty: A New Practice Role

Prerequisites: None
Become familiar with content related to the role of a clinical educator, including scenarios, resources, and examples for the nurse who is responsible for the clinical supervision and evaluation of nursing students or staff in a health care facility. You will discuss role development, managing the clinical day, clinical instruction and evaluation, policies and procedures, and strategies to support and encourage student learning.
You will:
- Identify policies, procedures, and resources to fulfill the clinical teaching role.
- Recognize the roles of clinical educator.
- Describe strategies to guide, support, facilitate, and encourage student learning.
- Identify the multiple components necessary to organize and implement the activities related to a clinical day.
- List guidelines for documenting student progress on clinical evaluation tools.
- Use effective evaluation principles when giving students feedback about clinical performance.
- Describe the interplay of student, environment, teaching, and evaluation in clinical education.
- Develop an online network to share teaching and learning knowledge and experiences.
The target audience for this course is both the new and experienced clinical faculty who wish to learn or update their knowledge of clinical nursing education.
Required computer skills
You should have basic computing skills including word processing and navigating the Web. For additional information, see the basic computer and software requirements.
Course structure
A course facilitator will be available during each course in order to provide you with opportunities to discuss questions, problems, and situations you have encountered. You must enter and participate in the course no later than five days after the course begins.
Assignments are due on a weekly basis and provide valuable interaction with colleagues and the instructor.
How you will be evaluated
Requirements for completion include the following:
- Post a Welcome – Introduction
- Post a statement in response to the module question in at least 90% of the discussion forum topics for Modules 1 – 6
- Module 1: Best Teacher
- Module 2: Unprepared Student
- Module 3-A: One of Me and Ten of Them
- Module 3-B: Safety
- Module 4: Student Evaluation
- Module 5: Essential Abilities
- Module 6: Closing Discussion
- Complete the course evaluation
Combining this course with the orientation at your school of nursing
Schools of nursing or health care facilities using this course for groups of participants may also consider having face-to-face discussion or brown bag lunches to discuss specific organizational policies, questions, and problems. Guidelines to supplement the online course have been developed and are available.

Refund policy
The registration fee less a $60 administrative fee is refundable acording to the refund schedule below:
- 100 percent refundable through the last day of the first full week of the course minus $60 administrative fee.
- 50 percent refundable through the last day of the second full week of the course minus $60 administrative fee.
Transfer fee
A transfer fee in the amount of 10% of the amount paid will apply when a request to transfer from the currently scheduled course to the next scheduled course is received and approved.
The refund policy will still apply if the participant later decides to drop the course.

The transfer fee and refund policies apply to individuals and groups taking the course for continuing nursing education.
The Indiana University School of Nursing’s Office of Lifelong Learning is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission of Accreditation.
Registration for this course is limited to forty (40) participants.
