Dr. Carter’s independent program of research is focused on generating knowledge to advance the state of the science in the area of infectious disease prevention; specifically, examining interventions to prevent HIV/STI transmission among rural men who have sex with other men (MSM). His research involves an interdisciplinary team of researchers from public health, gender studies, and the Kinsey Institute. Dr. Carter has an interest in behavior-based interventions and is currently working with a team of researchers at the Kinsey Institute to explore the role of advanced practice nurses in sexual risk assessment. In conjunction with the Rural Center for AIDS and STD Prevention, Dr. Carter has expanded his research to include barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake and the linkage of at-risk rural MSM into primary care.
