IU School of Nursing
Resource Center for Innovation in Clinical Nursing Education
600 Barnhill Drive, 3rd Floor
Indianapolis, IN 46202
At the SIM Institute, you will learn to design, implement, debrief, and evaluate simulations in nursing education and hospital settings. You will review evidence-based findings with an emphasis on guidelines for nurse educators using simulation in the educational arena. During the institute, you will learn the basic elements of setting up a simulation based on the framework of Jeffries (2005) and principles of best practice in using simulation.
During the four days of the institute, you will be immersed in simulations, become familiar with different types and uses of simulation, learn basic Laerdal programming skills, practice moulage techniques for the manikin, and improve debriefing skills.
The goals of the training are to:
- Identify key elements to include in a well-designed, learner-centered simulation
- Develop, set-up, run, debrief, and evaluate a simulation scenario
- Discuss strategies to successfully integrate simulations into the educational plan
Each participant will be required to complete pre-institute work and bring a laptop (no tablets or Apple products because of software required at institute) to the institute with programming software already downloaded. More information will be sent after registration is received.
Registration is extremely limited so register early!
Fees for future events will be posted when available.
Please note the cancellation policy, and also that transfers to future activities are not available for this institute.
Payment in full by credit card is due at the time of registration. On-site payment is not accepted. For questions about payment (only), contact Melissa Kocias at email@example.com or by phone at 812-855-4224.

Our lead SIM Institute facilitator is Evelyn Stephenson, DNP, RNC-NIC, NNP-BC, CHSE. Dr. Stephenson is an Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing and the Graduate Simulation Liaison to the Fairbanks Simulation Center. She has been a part of the SIM Institute for many years, and has served as the lead facilitator since 2018. In May of 2014, Evelyn completed a DNP at the University of Southern Indiana with a focus on using simulation to demonstrate and maintain competency with technical skills. Evelyn has over 30 years teaching in the academic and hospital setting. Her area of interest is neonatology and pregnancy. She has been active in teaching NRP since 1989. She has published manuscripts related to simulation. Evelyn is an active member of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation & Learning, Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the National Association for Neonatal Nurses. She has been a presenter of work regarding simulation at national and international meetings. Her current area of interest is centered on interprofessional faculty development and peer review of simulation.
Evelyn will be joined by multiple expert guest speakers and facilitators throughout the Institute week, and several additional School of Nursing faculty will be present to provide support and guidance to groups during their development and implementation activities.
