Requirements for All Students
Immunizations
Nursing students are required to provide proof of immunization against a variety of diseases. Students not meeting immunization requirements cannot remain in their nursing courses. You should have received most of these immunizations during your childhood, but others need to be more recent. The required immunizations include:
- Tetanus—Must show proof of vaccination within past ten years.
- Rubella (German Measles)—Must show proof of one dose of vaccine or a positive titre.
- Rubeola (Measles)—Must show proof of two measles vaccines, or a positive titre, or documented disease by a physician.
- Mumps—Must show proof of immunization or titre.
- Tuberculosis—Must have a PPD Tuberculin Skin Test within three months of the beginning of the program. If you have a newly positive reaction to the skin test, a chest x-ray is required and the results recorded on the immunization record. Your physician should indicate what treatment, if any, has been prescribed for you as a result of a positive skin test or chest x-ray.
- Hepatitis B—Administered in a series of three injections over a six-month period. The series needs to be started prior to beginning the nursing courses and the remainder can be completed after program entry.
- Chickenpox—Must have had the disease or have proof of a positive titre or have two doses of varicella vaccine.
If you were born before 1956, history of any of the first three is sufficient. To document your immunizations, please obtain an IUPUI Student Health Services form in the Center for Academic Affairs, NU 122.
Immunizations are available at IUPUI's Student Health Center, located in Coleman Hall, (317) 274-8214. Immunizations are also available at most county health departments. Visit the Marion County Health Department's Web site for information.
