Computing Recommendations and Requirements
NOTE: Most software required for IU students may be downloaded free of charge from IUWare Online.
Supported Operating Systems
- Windows 7 (the preferred Windows operating system at IU)
- Windows Vista (Enterprise or Ultimate) and XP Professional
- Mac OS X version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or greater
- The use of older versions of Windows and Mac operating systems is strongly discouraged for security reasons.
- iPhone, iPad, Android, and other mobile devices can access the wireless network and use some online services at IU; however, not all online services have been optimized for these devices and their smaller screens.
Software Compatibility
- To access many university resources, including Oncourse CL, most browsers will work; however the following are recommended: Internet Explorer 7.0 or 8.0; Firefox 3.0 and newer
- Microsoft Office Professional 2010 is the recommended Office Suite for applications such as Word and PowerPoint, although Office 2007 is available through IUWare and works in most situations.
Suggested System Requirements
- Optimal workstation: 2.3 GHz or faster with 3 GB minimum SDRAM
- Optimal laptop computer: 2.2 GHz or faster with 3 GB RAM
- Any currently shipping Apple desktop or portable computer
Browser Settings
In order to access Oncourse CL, your browser must have both cookies and Javascript enabled, which are default settings in the browsers.
Monitor Settings
The monitor screen resolution for optimal use in Oncourse CL is 1024 x 768.
Browser Plug-ins
Plugins are software components that are installed within the browsers themselves to enable richer Web experiences. The plug-ins listed below are the more common ones used by Web sites. Most browsers already have these installed. Visit the Web site by clicking the name of the application in the list below.

Purchasing Software and Hardware
If you possess a valid university Network ID, you may download or purchase software at great discounts:
- Download computing applications free of charge from IUware after logging in with your university Network ID.
- Purchase software through the Barnes & Noble @IUPUI Bookstore.
- Order IUware software via mail-in order from the IUWare Online Off Campus Ordering Web site, if you are not able to visit a bookstore in person.
