Nearly 100 Incoming Baccalaureate Students Participate in the IU School of Nursing's First Induction Ceremony in Over Thirty Years
Accelerated and traditional baccalaureate students, family, and friends gathered to celebrate their induction into the IU School of Nursing on the IUPUI campus. This ceremony, the first of its kind in over 30 years at the school, was hosted by last year’s incoming class, the class of December 2013, and IUSON faculty and staff. The class of December 2013 felt it was especially important to start a tradition that lets incoming nursing students know they have mentors whenever they need them.
“I started the planning process at the end of last sem
ester with my classmates,” said April Anderson, December 2013 class president. “I wanted some kind of welcome and congratulation for the new class
but never dreamed it would turn into what it did. I wanted the new class to see our class as a ‘big sister, big brother.’”
As Anderson and her classmates felt the need for a welcoming ceremony, so did many faculty and staff, especially Susan Hendricks, EdD, MSN, RN, Associate Dean for Undergraduate programs.
“It is a well-accepted practice for professional schools to formally welcome and initiate new members into its fold, and we are delighted to bring a formal welcome into the profession to the IUPUI baccalaureate students,” said Hendricks.
The ceremony began with a formal student processional and then several key figures from IUSON and IUPUI spoke to the students, welcoming them to the school and university. Among the speakers was Uday Sukhatme, PhD, Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculties, IUPUI. Sukhatme encouraged the students to take advantage of all the opportunities ahead for them at the School of Nursing, as well as the many activities IUPUI has to offer. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, delivered a moving and personalized address about the importance of professionalism in nursing.
Students were individually recognized for achieving the high educational standards required for acceptance into the School. After the ceremony, a reception was held for students and parents.
“We wanted to welcome these students and begin a tradition that encourages them to live our core values and

included a new twist on an old custom:
a professional pledge created by the class of December 2013. This pledge, modeled after the Nightingale pledge that nurses have been reciting for years, will continue to be used for ceremonies to come.
“All in all, I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to leave a footprint at IUSON,” said Anderson.
The Indiana University School of Nursing PledgeI hereby pledge before this assembly as a member of the Indiana University School of Nursing to uphold its core values of respect, responsibility, trust, and dialogue. I will appreciate all people, recognizing the importance of their individual contributions, and embracing diversity. I will take full responsibility for my actions, and foster trust by acting with honesty, integrity, and openness. I pledge to maintain high personal standards, and strive to elevate myself in the nursing profession through a process of lifelong learning. I will maintain the privacy and confidence of my patients. |
