Rose and Bill Mays were recently honored for their significant contributions to Indiana University, more specifically the School of Nursing, at the April 22nd Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon and Award Ceremony held at the IUPUI Campus Center.

A Commitment to Supporting Indiana University

Bill and Rose Mays personify philanthropy at Indiana University. Together they served as one of the five couples who chaired IUPUI’s comprehensive capital campaign raising more than $1.3 billion dollars. Rose served as a member of the Development Committee for the School of Nursing for this same campaign, co-chaired the campaign for the School’s first endowed professorship, and has served on the School’s Alumni Association Board. Bill has served on the Board of Advisors for the School and as a member of the Nominations Committee for the School’s awards for multiple years. He has also served on the IU Foundation Board and on the Advisory Council for the School of Business in Bloomington.
Bill and Rose have also been very generous in their financial support to Indiana University both on the IUPUI and Bloomington campuses. Athletics, business, Bepko Scholars, physical education and tourism, Kelley School of Business, multicultural affairs, Well House Society, and more have benefitted from their contributions. The School of Nursing is grateful for the continued commitment from Rose and Bill through their support of faculty professorships and fellowships, student scholarships, diversity enrichment, events, and the School of Nursing Fund.

Rose Mays

Rose serves as professor and Associate Dean for Community and International Affairs. For the past 20 years Rose’s professional interests have centered on improving the nursing care of adolescents and their families through conducting research, teaching nurses preparing for advanced practice roles, and developing community services for vulnerable teens. Rose obtained her master’s degree and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate from Indiana University School of Nursing.

Bill Mays

A native Hoosier, Bill received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University along with an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Indiana University Bloomington. Bill started Mays Chemical in 1980, and it is now listed as one of the 20 largest chemical distribution companies in North America. Bill also owns the Indianapolis Recorder, property management and leasing companies, leisure sports and recreational businesses, construction companies, and other small businesses.

A True Spirit of Philanthropy

The list of honors and awards received by Bill and Rose are extensive. The Indiana University School of Nursing is proud to add this well-deserved recognition to Bill and Rose for their spirit of philanthropy.

The Spirit of Philanthropy Awards is an annual celebration hosted by the IUPUI campus, the Indiana University Foundation, and the Center on Philanthropy to honor individuals, corporations, and foundations that have supported and contributed to university programs and departments through their gifts and and voluntary service.
