Biosketch

Dr. Bakas is currently an associate professor at Indiana University School of Nursing where she conducts research aimed at improving the quality of life of family caregivers of stroke survivors. Her descriptive work in this area has resulted in publications focusing on the needs and concerns of stroke caregivers, stress and coping model testing, and instrument development. Her current research focus is to design and evaluate theory-based interventions to improve quality of life outcomes in family caregivers of stroke survivors. She is the co-director of the Indiana University School of Nursing Center for Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness (CEQL). Dr. Bakas is also a Fellow of the American Heart Association and has been an active participant on various committees in both the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and the Stroke Council. Dr. Bakas received her ASN (1981) from Purdue University School of Nursing, and her BSN (1985), MSN (1988), and DNS (1996) degrees from Indiana University School of Nursing. She is a full member of the Indiana University Graduate School and currently teaches a research design course in the PhD program. She also mentors both undergraduate and graduate students in conducting research.
