Dr. Riner has a background in public health, international health, and occupational health nursing. She uses a participatory action research methodology to investigate population health concerns and develop strategies to promote that community's capacity to improve their health. She uses an ecological model to frame her study of the multiple-levels of intervention used to address community health. Dr. Riner is co-director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center in Health Cities at Indiana University. She also co-directs the Calnali International Service-Learning Program in which nursing, medical, dental and public health students provide health education and primary care to residents on a rural Mexican community.
