Dr. Russell has focused on improving minority health disparities through out her entire nursing career. Her program of research is in cancer prevention and control for African American populations. Currently, her funded studies are on promoting initial and repeat breast cancer screening in medically underserved African American women. Her goal is to develop and test combined interactive computer programs and lay health advisor interventions for increasing mammography screening in communities. Dr. Russell teaches community health nursing in both the graduate and undergraduate nursing programs. Her students have opportunities to engage in learning activities that increase their understanding of the contextual issues surrounding health issues in marginalized communities. As part of her community service, Dr. Russell has collaborated with numerous community groups for coalition development, community and organizational capacity building, and public policy advocacy. Most recently, she developed a lay health advisor program for the Black Nurses Association of Indianapolis for cancer prevention. She has held varying leadership positions in the Public Health Nursing Section of the American Public Health Association and was cofounder and first president of the Indiana Minority Health Coalition.
