The Trasition to Young Adulthood among Late Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes

Biosketch

Dr. Kathleen M. Hanna's program of research focuses on enhancing quality of life of adolescents in the areas of health promotion and chronic conditions.  Since earning a Ph.D. in Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh, she has focused on adolescent health perceptions and behaviors along with theory-based interventions.  Her early research was in the area of health promotion, focusing on promoting adolescents' contraceptive and condom use to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.  During her post-doctoral fellowship at Indiana University, she began integrating health promotion with chronic illness.  She is specifically focusing on the quality of life of adolescents with diabetes and how changing parent-adolescent relationships affect their assuming responsibility for diabetes care.  Dr. Hanna's National Institute of Health-sponsored research focuses on health outcomes of glycemic control and quality of life during the transition from high school to young adulthood among late adolescents with type 1 diabetes.  Findings will guide future interventions to promote healthy parent-adolescent relationships that facilitate adolescents' assumption of diabetes management responsibility and, subsequently, their health and quality of life.
