Biosketch
Dr. Haase is internationally recognized for her research on ways children, adolescents, young adults, and families positively adjust to the experience of cancer and other chronic illnesses. Her, “Resilience in Illness Model” (RIM) (formerly called the “Adolescent Resilience Model”) guides descriptive and intervention research to improve symptoms and psychosocial adjustment for adolescents and young adults with cancer. The RIM is currently being used to guide multi-site behavioral intervention studies to improve outcomes for adolescents/young adults with high-risk cancer and their parents. The RIM was recently adapted as the guiding framework for research conducted by the Children’s Oncology Group Nursing Discipline and also is being used by nurse scientists internationally. Dr. Haase is also recognized for her expertise in mixed methods research.
As Co-Director of the IUPUI Research in Palliative and End-of-Life Communication and Training (RESPECT) Center, Dr. Haase is working with an interdisciplinary community of scientists who aim to palliative care/end-of-life communication across the life-span. As a Co-Director of the T32 training grant in Behavioral Health Nursing and as an advisory board member of the R25 interdisciplinary training grant in behavioral oncology, Dr. Haase provides leadership in research training and mentors pre- and post-doctoral fellows, many of whom have successfully received external funding for their own work. Dr. Haase is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, received the 2007 Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award by the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nursing and the 2008 Oncology Nursing Society Connie Henke Yarbro Excellence in Cancer Nursing Mentorship Award. Dr. Haase has served on several foundation and NIH research study sections, and is serving a second term on the American Cancer Society (ACS) Council for Extramural Grants and was recently appointed to the ACS Scientific Council.
