Biosketch
Dr. Buelow is an Associate Professor in Adult health nursing and teaches in the undergraduate honor’s program, the clinical nurse specialist program and the PhD program. Additionally she serves as a co director the IU hospital nursing research committee. Her research interest centers on improving the quality of life in people with epilepsy. To that end she has developed a self-management model and published articles on self-management issues in person with epilepsy. She has a special interest regarding quality of life and family functioning in families with both epilepsy and significant learning problems (SLP). She has identified specific stressors in these families and has developed an intervention for parents of children with epilepsy and intellectual disability. She has been funded by the Centers for Enhancing Quality of Life, the Epilepsy Foundation and National Institutes of Health. Her articles have appeared in interdisciplinary and nursing journals including Developmental and Child Neurology, Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Epilepsy and Behavior. Dr. Buelow serves on the Epilepsy Foundation Board of Directors, the Epilepsy Foundation Professional Advisory Board, and the Epilepsy Foundation of Indiana Board of Directors. She also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, and the Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is the Vice-President for Research for the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation. She is active in leadership positions in the American Epilepsy Society, the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, and National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. She received the Barron McBride Quality of Life award in 2009 for her work with children with epilepsy and their parents. In 2010 she was named the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists Researcher of the Year award and received the first Pioneering Award from the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation.
