Biosketch

Dr. Martin's research is in the area of health care financing, policy, infant mortality, breastfeeding, community-based care coordination for pregnant women, home visiting programs to prevent child abuse and neglect, and program evaluation/planning. Her dissertation research addressed Determinants of the Duration of Breastfeeding for First-Time Mothers. She has received funding from the March of Dimes, the Indiana State Department of Health, Indianapolis Campaign for Healthy Babies, and other groups to reduce infant mortality in low-income, high-risk, rural and urban populations. Dr. Martin is director of statewide training and technical assistance for Healthy Families Indiana, an intensive home visiting program to prevent abuse and neglect of infants and young children. The program has been implemented in 91 of Indiana's 92 counties. As a member of the Indiana Perinatal Association, she led the efforts of 26 groups to pass legislation to expand Medicaid to pregnant women, infants, and preschool children. Dr. Martin served on the DHHS national advisory panel to develop perinatal strategies for the 21st century and was appointed by Governor Bayh to serve on the Indiana Commission on State Health Policy, which developed recommendations for health care reform in 1992. She has consulted in Jordan and Russia with USAID and WHO. She serves as director for Healthy Families America, sponsored by the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse.
