She has received and RO1 research grant from NIH for the study NG tube insertion, and has also received research grants from Sigma Theta Tau, Indiana Perinatal Association, Holister, Inc, National Association of Neonatal Nurses, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/The Pew Charitable Trusts, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center, and the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence.
Biosketch
Dr. Beckstrand's major research interests focus on emotion in caregiving with an emphasis in on ethological examination of anger emotion in Alzheimer’s caregivers. She also has a second research focus in clinical studies related to nasogastric tube insertion and other nursing procedures.
She has published in interdisciplinary journals including Journal of Advanced Nursing, Clinical Nursing Research, Journal of Professional Nursing, Journal of the Society of Pediatric Nurses, Research in Nursing and Health, Neonatal Network, and Gastroenterology Nursing. Her publications have been reprinted in textbooks and translated into Japanese.
She has given research presentations at the Midwest Nursing Research Society, the Sigma Theta Tau International Research Congress, the Gastroenterology Nursing and Associates Annual Educational Convention, the Pediatric Nursing Research Symposium, the American Nurses Association Council of Nurse Researchers, Annual Nursing Research Conference, Mayo Clinic, the National Meeting of Neonatal Nursing Research, and the Society for Behavioral Medicine.
In 1990, she was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1992 and served as an Invited Visiting Professor at Niehoff School of Nursing, Loyola University, Chicago, Weekend Series. Dr. Beckstrand has been a member of the NIH Nursing Study Section and serves a special reviewer for NIH. Her appointments at Indiana University School of Nursing have included Acting Associate Dean for Research, Assistant Dean for Clinical Research and Director of Clinical Research for Nursing Services, Indiana University Hospitals. She the Founder of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Nicaragua Support Project to train a Medical School Professor in Nicaragua in Biostatistics. She teaches theory development, statistics and communications.
