Dr. Carpenter’s research focuses on menopausal symptom management. Several of her noteworthy accomplishments are listed here: First, Dr. Carpenter pioneered the use of ambulatory sternal skin conductance monitoring as an objective measure of vasomotor symptoms. She has visited colleagues in three different countries to personally train them on using this measure (USA, Switzerland, Denmark) and routinely assists other international colleagues via email to support them in using this measure. Second, she developed a questionnaire to assess the degree to which hot flashes interfere in a woman’s daily life. This questionnaire has been used nationally and internationally in clinical trials to monitor response to pharmacological and behavioral therapies. Third, Dr. Carpenter (Rawl, CoI) developed and pilot tested a computerized symptom assessment tool for use in outpatient oncology clinics to monitor pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression. Fourth, as study co-investigator, she helped choose the symptom measures that were used in the Indiana Cancer Pain and Depression Study (Kroenke, PI). Fifth, Dr. Carpenter leads the menopausal symptom and quality of life assessment core for the Exemestane-Letrozole Pharmacogenetics Study (Flockhart, PI). In this role, she made evidence-based recommendations regarding the menopausal symptom and quality of life assessment methodologies that were chosen for inclusion as trial outcomes. Sixth, she chairs the Common Measures Committee within the research network called MsFLASH: Menopause Strategies-Finding Lasting Answers for Symptoms and Health. As chair, Dr. Carpenter has led the network in pilot testing miniaturized sternal skin conductance monitoring devices for vasomotor symptoms assessment and has had significant input into decisions regarding how the network will monitor subjective and objective responses in MsFLASH clinical trials. Her involvement in MsFLASH has solidified her expertise in subjective and objective assessment methodologies including Q-sort or card sort methodology, standardized questionnaires, direct patient interviewing, objective outcome assessment (e.g., actigraphy to measure sleep, sternal skin conductance monitoring of vasomotor symptoms, accelerometers to monitor energy expenditure, heart rate variability to monitor parasympathetic tone), and collection and interpretation of laboratory values (e.g., from blood, urine, or saliva). Dr. Carpenter is currently funded through the National Institutes of Aging and the National Cancer Institute as PI. Her past work has been funded by the American Cancer Society, the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the National Institute of Nursing Research. She has received several honors throughout her career, the most recent are selection as an Outstanding Alumni of the University of Kentucky College of Nursing (2010), Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2009), Midwest Nursing Research Society Senior Scientist (2008), and the North American Menopause Society / Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc Vasomotor Symptoms Research Award (2007). Her work has been published nationally and internationally. During 2011, she will present her research in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Rome, and Seoul.
