Dr. Lyon's research focus is stress-related illness and stress management. Specifically, her research has focused on the development of the Perceived Health Scale (PHS) and the PHS Short Form; identification of high utilizers of medical services who may be suffering from stress-related illnesses; and interventions to enhance self-care skills and wellness. The PHS measures perceived illness in three domains: physical sensations/symptoms, emotional disturbance, and actual functional ability in comparison with perceived capability and is used as both a screening and assessment tool. Dr. Lyon's research has been funded by IUSON's program development funds, the Walther Cancer Institute, and through corporate sources including Choice Care of Cincinnati and Proctor & Gamble. She is a past president of the Indiana State Nurses Association and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. She has published numerous articles including critical reviews of stress research and several self-help monographs for the lay public and nurses. She has served on the editorial board for the Journal of Nursing Diagnosis and is a reviewer for Applied Nursing Research and Research in Nursing & Health. Dr. Lyon is a Fellow in both the American Academy of Nursing and the National Academies of Practice.
