Dr. McNelis’s areas of contribution are research in nursing education and collaborative education/practice/community partnerships. In response to issues related to the preparation of a competent nursing workforce ready and able to provide safe, quality care, while at the same time confronted with shortages of quality clinical sites and faculty, she focuses her efforts on improving teaching and learning in clinical education. To contribute to the science of nursing education and provide national leadership, she conducts research to obtain evidence to improve clinical education and developing partnerships to maximize clinical education environments.
Based on the lack of evidence to support pedagogical decisions about clinical education, she collaborated on a national study to learn what nurse educators were doing in clinical education. Disseminated findings are providing directions for educators and researchers across the country. Concurrently, she established collaborative partnerships to create a new model of teaching/learning that fundamentally changes the way we educate students. Dr. McNelis's ongoing evaluation is guiding the revisions and expansion of this inititative internally, and, through dissemination, nationally.
