Dr. Burrage’s work focuses on the development of culturally sensitive/ linguistically-appropriate psychosocial interventions related to care seeking and access to health care of people at risk for and infected with HIV disease and other stigmatizing illnesses. His program of research encompasses aspects of clinical and health services research such as methods to develop and evaluate psychosocial programs for PWA’s ;as well as development and testing of nurse driven HIV prevention interventions to enhance HIV testing rates and decrease HIV risk in vulnerable high risk populations.
His NINR funded research, Salivary Rapid HIV Testing: Health Seeking and Coping in African Americans (7K01NR10086-01) seeks to support the community at large to begin to focus on HIV testing and ways to accomplish testing that is culturally sensitive and less stigmatizing. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and is Co-Chair of the AAN Emerging and Infectious Diseases Expert Panel. He also represents the AAN as the only nurse on the Executive Committee of the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research in Washington, D.C. He is also an active member of the American Public Health Assoc. and American Assembly of Men in Nursing. He has served in various leadership positions in the Association n of Nurses in AIDS Care. He currently coordinates and teaches in the MSN in Nursing Leadership program as well having teaching responsibilities in the DNP program.
